Check Vertical Clearance in Swept Path Analysis

AutoCAD-BricsCAD, Civil 3D, Kobi Swept Path

Swept path analysis isn’t just about turning radius and horizontal maneuvering, it also requires careful consideration of vertical constraints. From low bridges and tunnels to overhead signage and canopies, your design must ensure that vehicles have enough space above the ground.

With Kobi Swept Path’s Vertical Clearance feature, you can now easily assess height restrictions along predefined vehicle routes, directly in your CAD environment.

What Is Vertical Clearance Analysis?

The Vertical Clearance tool allows you to evaluate overhead space along an existing swept path entity. It works with lines, arcs, polylines, or Civil 3D profiles, allowing you to verify whether your selected vehicle can safely pass beneath structures along the route.

This is especially useful for:

  • Tunnels and bridge underpasses;
  • Building overhangs;
  • Overhead utilities or gantries;
  • Covered delivery zones and loading docks.

How It Works

Follow these steps to run a vertical clearance check:

  1. Go to:
    Kobi Swept Path > Create and Manage Analysis Panel > Vertical Clearance.
  2. Select a polyline, arc, line, or Civil 3D profile that defines a vehicle path. These entities will define the trajectory along which the vertical clearance analysis will be performed.
  3. Choose a vehicle in the Vehicle Library, and click OK.
  4. Kobi Swept Path will automatically generate a vertical envelope, based on the path and the vehicle’s dimensions.

With this workflow, you can quickly and accurately identify any vertical restrictions along the route.

Why It Matters

Clearance checks are often done too late in the design process. Kobi Swept Path helps you identify height issues early, avoid costly rework, and verifies compliance with real-world clearance requirements. Whether you’re working on industrial sites, urban streets, or transport terminals, vertical clearance analysis ensures your path is safe not just horizontally, but vertically too.
