Road marking software for BIM-ready pavement markings

AutoCAD-BricsCAD, Civil 3D, Kobi Signs & Stripes

Pavement markings are a critical part of traffic design. In today’s CAD projects, they should not be just lines on a surface – they should carry real data. Besides geometry, pavement markings also need structured data such as type, dimensions, quantities and applicable standards.

Kobi Signs and Stripes allows BIM properties to be attached directly to pavement markings during the creation process. When you draw a 2D marking, the 3D model and its property set are created at the same time.

With Kobi Signs and Stripes, which works with Autodesk AutoCAD, Civil 3D and BricsCAD, BIM properties can be attached directly to pavement markings during the creation process. When a 2D pavement marking is drawn, a corresponding 3D model can be generated at the same time, and BIM Property Sets can be assigned simultaneously.

In this article, we show a practical setup for creating BIM-ready road markings directly in Autodesk Civil 3D using Kobi Signs and Stripes.

Create a Property Set and Add it to Pavement Markings

1. Define the Property Set

In Autodesk Civil 3D, the first step is to define the Property Set that will be assigned to pavement markings.
This is done using the PROPERTYSETDEFINE command.

In the Style Manager dialog, create a new Property Set Definition. The style can be named TrafficMarkings.

On the right side of the dialog, you will notice three main tabs:

  • General
  • Applies To
  • Definition

In the General tab, the name and description of the Property Set Definition are defined. This is where the overall identity of the Property Set is configured.

In the Applies To tab, the object types to which the BIM properties will be attached are specified. This step is critical, as it determines which Civil 3D objects can receive the Property Set.

In the Definition tab, the actual Property Set structure is defined. Here, all attributes are created, including the property name, description, data type, default value, and display order. All attributes defined in this step will later be attached to the 3D marking models.

Below is an example of a Property Set that will be used in this workflow.

After completing the setup, click Apply and close the dialog.

2. Add Property Set to a Pavement marking

Next, in Kobi Signs and Stripes, select the command used to create pavement markings, for example Line Markings.

In the Line Marking dialog, click the Settings button in the bottom-left corner, and locate the Pay Item and Property Set section. Enable the option Add Property Set to 3D Mesh, and select the previously defined Property Set from the drop-down list.

When a 2D pavement marking is drawn and projected onto the road surface to generate a 3D pavement marking model, the defined Property Set attributes are automatically written to the resulting 3D objects. As a result, each pavement marking is created with both accurate geometry and fully populated BIM data, directly within the Civil 3D environment.

All attributes stay attached to the generated 3D pavement marking objects, so nothing is lost when you move from 2D to 3D.

You can inspect, filter, and manage each marking directly in the Property Panel, so you can quickly check key information such as type, material, standards, and project-specific data.

In practice, this means pavement markings behave like proper BIM objects, not just geometry.

You spend less time re-entering data, coordination is simpler, and the same information is used for design and documentation.

In Kobi Signs & Stripes, everything is handled in one place, which makes the workflow easier to control from design through delivery.
